WHAT IS A CHRISTIAN?
Before you read this, the question has to be asked: Do you want the truth or not?

    There are several viewpoints on what it means to be a Christian.
    1.  There is the unbiblical viewpoint which is held by most people.
    2.  Then there is the biblical viewpoint. 
    The two are much different.

    1.  In the opinion of many, a Christian is a person that goes to a Christian church. This can often include cults. If a person is a Roman Catholic, Protestant, or some other denomination that preaches Christ, they consider themselves as a Christian and others also think of them likewise.
    If a person is a Moslem or Hindu or of some other religion and transfer over to a Christian church, they are usually called a Christian. It is quite common for a person, when asked what faith they are, to reply, "I am a Christian." They say this because they go to a church that preaches about Jesus Christ and at least something from the Bible. They have no idea what it means to be a real born-again Christian.
    The term born-again has become so distorted that the biblical meaning is only understood by a few. People commit hideous crimes and say they are born-again. Many mentally deranged people in this generation claim they are born-again. They say that God told them to do this or that. In the name of Christ or God, they do unbelievably evil things. Others that claim they are a Christian or born-again commit suicide, sometimes in mass numbers. God forbid. Yet others that claim they follow Christ and are born again commit adultery or other ungodly acts which often become public. Some make prophecies openly on television which are clearly wrong.
    Many Christian churches are now teaching doctrines that are a long way from biblical truth. Everything from doctrines of great prosperity, worldly psychology, worldly pleasures, gambling, laughing, touching a certain object to be healed, give us your money in exchange for a miracle, and other such things are filling the Christian churches and airways. The fear of God, God’s wrath, God’s judgment, repentance, obeying the Bible, the Revelation, Bible prophecy, and the pre-Tribulation Rapture are seldom taught in most churches anymore.
    It is no wonder that the general unsaved public has a very low opinion of those claiming to be born-again. Often these so-called Christians might refer to God as the Man up there, the Man upstairs, or some other like term.
   When have you ever heard a minister say at a funeral that the person was now in hell? Don’t they usually say, "The person is now in heaven or in a better place?" The sad fact is the Bible tells us the number of people that inherit eternal life is only a few-ref Mt 7:14. Isa 54:1-FOR MORE ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE DESOLATE THAN THE CHILDREN OF THE MARRIED WIFE, SAITH THE LORD. Gal 4:27-FOR THE DESOLATE HATH MANY MORE CHILDREN THAN SHE WHICH HATH AN HUSBAND. More are the children of the devil than the children of Jesus.

    2.  So, you might ask what is a real Christian? The word Christian or Christians is mentioned in the Bible 3 times. It is written-
    Acts 26:28-THEN AGRIPPA SAID UNTO PAUL, ALMOST THOU PERSUADEST ME TO BE A CHRISTIAN.
    1 Pe 4:16-YET IF ANY MAN SUFFER AS A CHRISTIAN, LET HIM NOT BE ASHAMED; BUT LET HIM GLORIFY GOD ON THIS BEHALF.
    Acts 11:26-AND WHEN HE HAD FOUND HIM, HE BROUGHT HIM UNTO ANTIOCH. AND IT CAME TO PASS, THAT A WHOLE YEAR THEY ASSEMBLED THEMSELVES WITH THE CHURCH, AND TAUGHT MUCH PEOPLE. AND THE DISCIPLES WERE CALLED CHRISTIANS FIRST IN ANTIOCH.

    The words saint, disciple and Christian are synonymous.
    It could be said that to understand what a Christian is according to the Scriptures and in the eyes of God, certain words or phrases need to be understood. These are in presented in alphabetical order:

Born-again.
Comes to Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone by faith. The Christ the person comes to must be the Christ outlined in the Scriptures not some other Christ. Jesus is DEITY. He is God. He is the middle Person of the Godhead—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
Converted to Christ not to a church or denominational teaching and childlike toward correction from God’s Word.
Disciple.
Doer of the Word.
Evidence of fruit (or Christlike attitude).
Grace.
Humbleness—pride repented of.
Jesus Christ is God’s only begotten Son, born of the virgin Mary, died on Calvary, rose from the dead, ascended up to heaven and now sits on the right hand of God the Father in heaven, making intercession for the saints.
Obedience to God’s Word.
Obey God’s commandments.
Personal relationship.
Repented.

ONLY AFTER REPENTING AND COMING TO CHRIST BY FAITH THEN that person—who has already put their trust in Christ and Christ alone as their only hope of salvation—that person is under the command to be baptized by full immersion in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
If a person is truly born-again, the Holy Spirit dwells inside that person.

    Many other words could be used.

   IN ORDER TO BE SAVED, A PERSON MUST COME TO JESUS CHRIST AND JESUS CHRIST ALONE BY FAITH. It is written: Acts 4:12-NEITHER IS THERE SALVATION IN ANY OTHER: FOR THERE IS NONE OTHER NAME UNDER HEAVEN GIVEN AMONG MEN, WHEREBY WE MUST BE SAVED. Eph 2:8-FOR BY GRACE ARE YE SAVED THROUGH FAITH.
   THE CHRIST MUST BE THE CHRIST OUTLINED IN THE SCRIPTURES NOT SOME OTHER CHRIST. It is written: Lk 24:44-...THAT ALL THINGS MUST BE FULFILLED, WHICH WERE WRITTEN IN THE LAW OF MOSES, AND IN THE PROPHETS, AND IN THE PSALMS, CONCERNING ME.
   JESUS IS DEITY.  HE IS GOD. It is written: Jn 1:1, 14-IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD, AND THE WORD WAS WITH GOD, AND THE WORD (which is Jesus) WAS GOD. AND THE WORD (which is Jesus) WAS MADE FLESH, AND DWELT AMONG US, (AND WE BEHELD HIS GLORY, THE GLORY AS OF THE ONLY BEGOTTEN OF THE FATHER,) FULL OF GRACE AND TRUTH. Jesus is God. It is by Him that all things were created.
    HE IS THE MIDDLE PERSON OF THE GODHEAD—GOD THE FATHER, GOD THE SON, AND GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT. It is written: I Jn 5:7-FOR THERE ARE THREE THAT BEAR RECORD IN HEAVEN, THE FATHER, THE WORD (which is Jesus), AND THE HOLY GHOST: AND THESE THREE ARE ONE.

   A PERSON MUST BE CONVERTED TO CHRIST, NOT TO A CHURCH OR DENOMINATIONAL TEACHING. An inner change needs to take place. It is written: 1 Cor 3:3,4-OR YE ARE YET CARNAL: FOR WHEREAS THERE IS AMONG YOU ENVYING, AND STRIFE, AND DIVISIONS, ARE YE NOT CARNAL, AND WALK AS MEN? FOR WHILE ONE SAITH, I AM OF PAUL; AND ANOTHER, I AM OF APOLLOS; ARE YE NOT CARNAL? It may be said, I am a Catholic, I am a Baptist, I am a Presbyterian, etc. Are ye not carnal or worldly? Mt 18:3-VERILY I SAY UNTO YOU, EXCEPT YE BE CONVERTED (the conversion must be to Christ, not a denomination, theology, or church). It is written: Acts 3:19-REPENT YE THEREFORE, AND BE CONVERTED.
   A PERSON NEEDS TO BE CHILDLIKE TOWARD CORRECTION FROM GOD’S WORD. It is written: Mt 18:3-AND BECOME AS LITTLE CHILDREN (which means as a little child receives correction from his earthly father, so a person converted to Christ must become like a little child in receiving correction from God’s Word). If this conversion and childlike attitude does not take place, the verse is very clear—YE SHALL NOT ENTER INTO THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. Note it says, little child.

   A PERSON MUST REPENT. It is written: Lk 13:3-I TELL YOU, NAY: BUT, EXCEPT YE REPENT, YE SHALL ALL LIKEWISE PERISH. To put it very bluntly, most people have never repented of their sins. Most don't even understand what repentance even is. Some don't even believe they sin at all. Sadly, most people will perish.

   A PERSON NEEDS TO HUMBLE THEMSELVES. PRIDE NEEDS TO BE REPENTED OF. It is written: Ja 4:6-GOD RESISTETH THE PROUD, BUT GIVETH GRACE UNTO THE HUMBLE. Mk 7:21-22-FOR FROM WITHIN, OUT OF THE HEART OF MEN, PROCEED EVIL THOUGHTS, ADULTERIES, FORNICATIONS, MURDERS, THEFTS, COVETOUSNESS, WICKEDNESS, DECEIT, LASCIVIOUSNESS, AN EVIL EYE, BLASPHEMY, PRIDE, FOOLISHNESS. Note evil thoughts include pride, murders, wickedness.

   ONLY BY GOD’S GRACE CAN A PERSON BE SAVED. It is written: Eph 2:8-10-FOR BY GRACE ARE YE SAVED THROUGH FAITH; AND THAT NOT OF YOURSELVES: IT IS THE GIFT OF GOD: NOT OF WORKS, LEST ANY MAN SHOULD BOAST. FOR WE ARE HIS WORKMANSHIP, CREATED IN CHRIST JESUS UNTO GOOD WORKS, WHICH GOD HATH BEFORE ORDAINED THAT WE SHOULD WALK IN THEM.

    ONLY AFTER REPENTING AND COMING TO CHRIST BY FAITH THEN that person—who has already put their trust in Christ and Christ alone as their only hope of salvation and has repented—that person is under the command to be baptized by full immersion in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Sprinkling and infant baptism is no baptism at all. It is man’s way, not God’s way.
    It is written: Ro 6:4-THEREFORE WE ARE BURIED WITH HIM BY BAPTISM (or buried…by water) INTO DEATH: THAT LIKE AS CHRIST WAS RAISED UP FROM THE DEAD BY THE GLORY OF THE FATHER, EVEN SO WE ALSO SHOULD WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE. Col 2:12-BURIED WITH HIM IN BAPTISM (or buried…in water), WHEREIN ALSO YE ARE RISEN WITH HIM THROUGH THE FAITH OF THE OPERATION OF GOD, WHO HATH RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD. Mk 16:16-HE THAT BELIEVETH (note this is first) AND IS BAPTIZED (note this comes after) SHALL BE SAVED; BUT HE THAT BELIEVETH NOT SHALL BE DAMNED. There is no water baptism if a person does not believe, for how can a person be baptized into one in whom they don't believe? A person cannot be baptized into one in whom they don't believe. First a person believes in Jesus with all their heart. It is written: Gal 3:27-FOR AS MANY OF YOU AS HAVE BEEN BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST HAVE PUT ON CHRIST. A person is to repent and then get baptized. It is written: Acts 2:37-38-NOW WHEN THEY HEARD THIS, THEY WERE PRICKED IN THEIR HEART, AND SAID UNTO PETER AND TO THE REST OF THE APOSTLES, MEN AND BRETHREN, WHAT SHALL WE DO? THEN PETER SAID UNTO THEM, REPENT (note this is first), AND BE BAPTIZED EVERY ONE OF YOU…(this is second). IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS, AND YE SHALL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST. Water baptism is to be done in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; as it is written: Mt 28:19-GO YE THEREFORE, AND TEACH ALL NATIONS, BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON, AND OF THE HOLY GHOST.

   IF A PERSON IS TRULY BORN-AGAIN, THE HOLY SPIRIT DWELLS INSIDE THAT PERSON. IF A PERSON DOES NOT HAVE THE HOLY GHOST, THEY CANNOT BE SAVED. It is written: Ro 8:9-11-BUT YE ARE NOT IN THE FLESH, BUT IN THE SPIRIT, IF SO BE THAT THE SPIRIT OF GOD DWELL IN YOU. NOW IF ANY MAN HAVE NOT THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST, HE IS NONE OF HIS. To be blunt, if any man does not have the Spirit of God, he is not saved and will not go to heaven. AND IF CHRIST BE IN YOU, THE BODY IS DEAD BECAUSE OF SIN; BUT THE SPIRIT IS LIFE BECAUSE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS. BUT IF THE SPIRIT OF HIM THAT RAISED UP JESUS FROM THE DEAD DWELL IN YOU, HE THAT RAISED UP CHRIST FROM THE DEAD SHALL ALSO QUICKEN YOUR MORTAL BODIES BY HIS SPIRIT THAT DWELLETH IN YOU.
    Ro 5:5-THE HOLY GHOST WHICH IS GIVEN UNTO US.
    1 Cor 3:16-…THE SPIRIT OF GOD DWELLETH IN YOU?
    1 Cor 6:19-WHAT? KNOW YE NOT THAT YOUR BODY IS THE TEMPLE OF THE HOLY GHOST WHICH IS IN YOU, WHICH YE HAVE OF GOD, AND YE ARE NOT YOUR OWN?
    2 Tim 1:14-…THE HOLY GHOST WHICH DWELLETH IN US.

   EVIDENCE OF THE INDWELLING OF THE HOLY GHOST. If a person does have the Holy Ghost, there should be evidence. One evidence is a desire to read and study God’s Word. It is written: 1 Pe 2:2-3-AS NEWBORN BABES (a person that has just become born-again), DESIRE THE SINCERE MILK OF THE WORD, THAT YE MAY GROW THEREBY. A person that has the Spirit of God, a person that is truly born-again has a desire for the Word of God so that they may grow in wisdom, knowledge of God, and faith. Faith only comes from God’s Word-ref Ro 10:17. A person cannot have more faith than they have knowledge and understanding from God’s Word. That desire is like a newborn baby desiring milk. If a newborn baby does not receive nourishment, it will die. If a newborn Christian does not receive nourishment from God’s Word, he will die. The verse continues: IF SO BE YE HAVE TASTED THAT THE LORD IS GRACIOUS. If the person has truly been saved that desire for God’s Word will be present. It is written: 2 Tim 2:15-STUDY TO SHEW THYSELF APPROVED UNTO GOD, A WORKMAN THAT NEEDETH NOT TO BE ASHAMED, RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE WORD OF TRUTH.

    Another evidence that the person is truly saved and has the Spirit of God is a childlike attitude toward correction from God’s Word as we have already covered.

    Another evidence is the fruit of the Spirit of God begins to come forth. A new attitude begins to emerge. As a person learns from God’s Word, a more Christlike attitude begins to surface, and the old worldly attitude begins to fade. Depending on a person’s heart, this can happen faster in some and slower in others. It can also happen faster in a person that spends much time in God’s Word and obeys it. A person that spends very little time in God’s Word and makes lots of excuses may grow at a very slow pace or even backslide. It is written in Gal 5:22-24-BUT THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS LOVE, JOY, PEACE, LONGSUFFERING, GENTLENESS, GOODNESS, FAITH, MEEKNESS, TEMPERANCE: AGAINST SUCH THERE IS NO LAW. AND THEY THAT ARE CHRIST'S HAVE CRUCIFIED THE FLESH WITH THE AFFECTIONS AND LUSTS.
    Gal 5:22-24 NIV-BUT THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GOODNESS, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS AND SELF-CONTROL. AGAINST SUCH THINGS THERE IS NO LAW. THOSE WHO BELONG TO CHRIST JESUS HAVE CRUCIFIED THE SINFUL NATURE WITH ITS PASSIONS AND DESIRES.

    A person needs to believe correctly. JESUS CHRIST IS GOD’S ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, BORN OF THE VIRGIN MARY, DIED ON CALVARY, ROSE FROM THE DEAD, ASCENDED UP TO HEAVEN AND NOW SITS ON THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD THE FATHER IN HEAVEN, MAKING INTERCESSION FOR THE SAINTS.

   DO WHAT GOD’S WORD SAYS. It is written: Ja 1:22-BUT BE YE DOERS OF THE WORD, AND NOT HEARERS ONLY, DECEIVING YOUR OWN SELVES.

   OBEY GOD’S WORD. It is written: Acts 5:32-AND WE ARE HIS WITNESSES OF THESE THINGS; AND SO IS ALSO THE HOLY GHOST, WHOM GOD HATH GIVEN TO THEM THAT OBEY HIM. Obey God’s Word. Heb 5:9-AND BEING MADE PERFECT, HE BECAME THE AUTHOR OF ETERNAL SALVATION UNTO ALL THEM THAT OBEY HIM. Obey God’s Word.

   KEEP GOD’S COMMANDMENTS. It is written: Jn 15:10-IF YE KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS, YE SHALL ABIDE IN MY LOVE; EVEN AS I HAVE KEPT MY FATHER'S COMMANDMENTS, AND ABIDE IN HIS LOVE. Jn 14:15-IF YE LOVE ME, KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS.

   GOD WANTS US TO KNOW HIM. WE ARE TO HAVE A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. A person that only talks to his wife 5 minutes a day, does not have much of a relationship with her. A person that spends only 5 minutes in Bible study and prayer a day, does not have much of a relationship with Christ. 1 Jn 5:20-AND WE KNOW THAT THE SON OF GOD IS COME, AND HATH GIVEN US AN UNDERSTANDING, THAT WE MAY KNOW HIM THAT IS TRUE, AND WE ARE IN HIM THAT IS TRUE, EVEN IN HIS SON JESUS CHRIST. THIS IS THE TRUE GOD, AND ETERNAL LIFE.
    Heb 10:30-FOR WE KNOW HIM…
    Jn 14:17-EVEN THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH; WHOM THE WORLD CANNOT RECEIVE, BECAUSE IT SEETH HIM NOT, NEITHER KNOWETH HIM: BUT YE KNOW HIM; FOR HE DWELLETH WITH YOU, AND SHALL BE IN YOU.
    1 Jn 2:4-HE THAT SAITH, I KNOW HIM, AND KEEPETH NOT HIS COMMANDMENTS, IS A LIAR, AND THE TRUTH IS NOT IN HIM.
    1 Jn 2:3-AND HEREBY WE DO KNOW THAT WE KNOW HIM, IF WE KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS.

   1.  Now after reading God’s Word, which kind of  Christian are you? Do you call yourself a Christian simply because you go to a church that teaches from the Bible and teaches about Christ? Do you simply call yourself a Christian because you sing in a choir or teach Sunday school? Do you call yourself a Christian because you stand behind a pulpit on Sunday? Hell has many such people. In the opinion of many, a Christian is a person that goes to a Christian church. This can often include cults. If someone is a Roman Catholic, Protestant, or some other denomination that preaches Christ, they consider themselves a Christian and others also think of them likewise.

    2.  Or are you a true born-again Christian according to God’s Word? It is written: 2 Cor 13:5-EXAMINE YOURSELVES, WHETHER YE BE IN THE FAITH; PROVE YOUR OWN SELVES. KNOW YE NOT YOUR OWN SELVES, HOW THAT JESUS CHRIST IS IN YOU, EXCEPT YE BE REPROBATES? Are you on fire for Jesus, 7 days a week, or is He someone you only think about on Sunday? Is Jesus the center of your life, or is the world and your own self-interests the center of your life? Most believe they are a true Christian not because of God’s Word but because of their own distorted, unbiblical beliefs. Can you be truthful with yourself on this subject? Most people think they are saved, yet the Bible tells us that only a few go to heaven. Which are you according to God’s Word?

   IT IS GOD’S WORD, NOT YOUR EMOTIONS THAT WILL JUDGE YOU AT THE JUDGMENT. It is written: Jn 12:48-HE THAT REJECTETH ME, AND RECEIVETH NOT MY WORDS, HATH ONE THAT JUDGETH HIM: THE WORD THAT I HAVE SPOKEN, THE SAME SHALL JUDGE HIM IN THE LAST DAY.

   YOU ABSOLUTELY, UNCONDITIONALLY MUST BE BORN-AGAIN ACCORDING TO GOD’S WORD, OR YOU WILL PERISH. It is written: Jn 3:3-JESUS ANSWERED AND SAID UNTO HIM, VERILY, VERILY, I SAY UNTO THEE, EXCEPT A MAN BE BORN AGAIN, HE CANNOT SEE THE KINGDOM OF GOD. Jn 1:13-BORN NOT OF BLOOD, NOR OF THE WILL OF THE FLESH, NOR OF THE WILL OF MAN, BUT OF GOD. 1 Pe 1:23-BEING BORN AGAIN, NOT OF CORRUPTIBLE SEED, BUT OF INCORRUPTIBLE, BY THE WORD OF GOD WHICH LIVETH AND ABIDETH FOREVER. 1 Jn 2:29-IF YE KNOW THAT HE IS RIGHTEOUS, YE KNOW THAT EVERYONE THAT DOETH RIGHTEOUSNESS IS BORN OF HIM.
   1 Jn 3:8-10-HE THAT COMMITTETH SIN IS OF THE DEVIL; FOR THE DEVIL SINNETH FROM THE BEGINNING. FOR THIS PURPOSE THE SON OF GOD WAS MANIFESTED, THAT HE MIGHT DESTROY THE WORKS OF THE DEVIL. WHOSOEVER IS BORN OF GOD DOTH NOT COMMIT SIN; FOR HIS SEED REMAINETH IN HIM: AND HE CANNOT SIN, BECAUSE HE IS BORN OF GOD. IN THIS THE CHILDREN OF GOD ARE MANIFEST, AND THE CHILDREN OF THE DEVIL: WHOSOEVER DOETH NOT RIGHTEOUSNESS IS NOT OF GOD, NEITHER HE THAT LOVETH NOT HIS BROTHER. 1 Jn 5:18-WE KNOW THAT WHOSOEVER IS BORN OF GOD SINNETH NOT; BUT HE THAT IS BEGOTTEN OF GOD KEEPETH HIMSELF, AND THAT WICKED ONE TOUCHETH HIM NOT. 1 Pe 2:2-AS NEWBORN BABES, DESIRE THE SINCERE MILK OF THE WORD, THAT YE MAY GROW THEREBY.
    Gal 6:15-FOR IN CHRIST JESUS NEITHER CIRCUMCISION AVAILETH ANY THING, NOR UNCIRCUMCISION, BUT A NEW CREATURE.

    A true Christian is not one that calls himself a Christian. A true Christian is one that has been born-again according to the Word of God, which shall judge him. A true Christian’s actions should bear witness that he has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, not according to what people think, but according to the Word of God.

    Question—What type of Christian are you? Examine yourself by God’s Word to see. Are you a true Christian, a disciple of God’s Word, a saint in the eyes of God through faith in Jesus Christ, or are you only a nominal Christian?

    May we leave you with these words regarding the things you speak. Is your conversation as a Christian's ought to be? It is written: Col 4:6-LET YOUR SPEECH BE ALWAY WITH GRACE, SEASONED WITH SALT, THAT YE MAY KNOW HOW YE OUGHT TO ANSWER EVERY MAN.
    Or is your conversation centered in the world, as it is written: Jn 3:31…HE THAT IS OF THE EARTH IS EARTHLY, AND SPEAKETH OF THE EARTH. A worldly, carnal person, their conversation is not centered on Jesus—but on the world. The carnal, worldly person has their conversation, Eph 2:3-IN THE LUSTS OF (their) FLESH, FULFILLING THE DESIRES OF THE FLESH AND OF THE MIND; AND (are) BY NATURE THE CHILDREN OF WRATH, EVEN AS OTHERS.
    1 Jn 4:5-THEY ARE OF THE WORLD: THEREFORE SPEAK THEY OF THE WORLD, AND THE WORLD HEARETH THEM.
    Phil 3:19-20-(Their) END IS DESTRUCTION, WHOSE GOD IS THEIR BELLY, AND WHOSE GLORY IS IN THEIR SHAME, WHO MIND EARTHLY THINGS.)
    FOR OUR CONVERSATION (the conversation of a true born-again Christian) IS IN HEAVEN; FROM WHENCE ALSO WE LOOK FOR THE SAVIOUR, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.
